Fighting Drug Abuse: Taraba Govt. To Partner With Hope A fresh Foundation
As the Hope Afresh Foundation intensifies the fight against drugs and substance abuse , the Taraba State Government has revealed readiness to collaborate with the Organization to ensure that the menace is stamped out.
The Deputy Governor of the State, Engr. Haruna Manu made this disclosure at the two-day Sensitization Workshop organised by the Hope Afresh Foundation Taraba at the Gym Hall of the Jolly Nyame Stadium Jalingo.
He stressed the need for the Hope Afresh Foundation to collaborate with the State Government to sponsor a bill to effectively prosecute offenders and the establishment of a rehabilitation centre for the State.
Quoting the statistical figure of one addict to five persons which he described as “unacceptable” , he reiterated the need for stakeholders to do all it takes to win the war and salvage tomorrow’s leaders.
He noted that “this is not just a State problem, the entire nation is at war with drug and substance abuse as it eats deeper into the lives of future leaders “. He further emphasised on the need to brace up until the fight is won.
Engr. Manu, therefore, called on the private sector to take a clue from the
Hope Afresh Foundation Taraba in joining hands with the Taraba State Government to provide more economic activities to eliminate idleness and empower young entrepreneurs.
Wife of the Taraba State Governor and founder of the Hope Afresh Foundation Taraba , Barr. Anna Darius Ishaku also stressed the need for a rehabilitation centre to cater for victims of this abuse who will be savaged after the sensitization adding that the campaign will be taken to all the zones of the State to ensure a thorough work is done.
She, however, stated that the State would need more than one rehabilitation centre as people can easily assess the facility when it is closer to them.
The First Lady appreciated the various women groups, organisations, educational institutions and individuals who participated in both the rally and the workshop. She charged them to do all within their power to spread the message and save victims from the claws of the deadly practice.
The workshop with the theme Strategic Focus: Building a Society Free From Substance Abuse featured paper presentations on; Substance Abuse and its Consequences: Which Way Forward by Mr. Peter Odaudu, Assistant State Commander, Operation and Intelligence National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA; Legal Consequences of Substance Abuse by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Justice Jalingo, Apwenyan Shitta.
Other papers were; Alarming Statistics and Possible Solutions to Substance Abuse by Dr. Dashe and The Role of the Family in the Control of Substance Abuse by Mrs. E. B. Shamaki, Coordinator Sandwich, Taraba State University.
