New players are coming in' - Molby expects Liverpool summer spending spree
The Reds were surprisingly quiet during January, but a former Anfield favourite believes there will be plenty of movement when the window re-opens
Jan Molby was surprised to see a Liverpool side “treading water” fail to add during the January transfer window, but is expecting plenty of new arrivals in the summer.
The Reds have endured a tough opening to 2017, on the back of a positive end to 2016, with avenues to potential silverware being blocked off.
Disappointing exits have been suffered in the FA and EFL Cups, while the dropping of precious points in the Premier League has seen them slip off the title pace.
Molby believes arrivals could have helped to “kick-start” Liverpool’s season in January, but is confident that the squad will be reshaped ahead of the 2017-18 campaign.
“I’d have liked us to have made a signing in January," Molby wrote in a column for the Liverpool Echo.
“Sometimes you’re just treading water a little bit and you need something to kick-start your season again. We didn’t but now we go into a period of 15 games in 15 weeks which should suit us.
“In terms of the squad, Jurgen Klopp’s shown a lot of patience but I think it’s important to him.
“When he makes decisions he likes to be able to look the player in the eye and say ‘I gave you every opportunity’.
“So we look forward to the summer. Klopp will never be a chequebook manager but there will be some new players coming in that’s for sure.
“As much as you want the young players to be involved, only exceptional young players get in the first team and never come out again and the ones we’ve got are still probably 18 months to two years away from being able to challenge for the first team.”
Liverpool will be looking to collect just a second win of the calendar year when they travel to Hull City on Saturday, helping to cement a top-four standing that has become rather precarious.
